Marina Smilets of Bulgaria - Family

Family

The date and the place of Marina's birth are unknown, but she was born before her father's ascension on the Bulgarian throne in 1292, maybe in his official residence in Kran. Her mother was the daughter of sebastocrator Constantine Palaiologos and niece of Michael VIII Palaiologos. In the histories she was called just Smiltsena (Bulgarian: Смилцена; the wife of Smilets), without a name being given. Marina was the elder sister of tsar Ivan II of Bulgaria and Theodora, queen-consort of Kingdom of Serbia. Marina Smilets was maternal aunt of King Stefan Uroš IV Dušan of Serbia.

Famous quotes containing the word family:

For every nineteenth-century middle-class family that protected its wife and child within the family circle, there was an Irish or a German girl scrubbing floors in that home, a Welsh boy mining coal to keep the home-baked goodies warm, a black girl doing the family laundry, a black mother and child picking cotton to be made into clothes for the family, and a Jewish or an Italian daughter in a sweatshop making “ladies” dresses or artificial flowers for the family to purchase.
    Stephanie Coontz (20th century)

Every family has one passage of scripture they stumble over.
    Chinese proverb.

The family is the test of freedom; because the family is the only thing that the free man makes for himself and by himself.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)
