Manila Army and Navy Club

The Manila Army and Navy Club was a club open only to military officers in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. While the club no longer exists, its building, built by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1911, is located along Luneta Park at the shore of Manila Bay. The club shared a lot with the Manila Elks Club, a local branch of the fraternal lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks whose membership was open to civilians, and together they were the center of the social life of the Americans during many decades.

In the later part of the 20th century the 1911 building gradually decayed. In 2007 the then derelict building was planned to be renovated.

Famous quotes containing the words army, navy and/or club:

It is only the enlightened ruler and the wise general who will use the highest intelligence of the army for the purposes of spying, and thereby they achieve great results.
    Sun Tzu (6–5th century B.C.)

People run away from the name subsidy. It is a subsidy. I am not afraid to call it so. It is paid for the purpose of giving a merchant marine to the whole country so that the trade of the whole country will be benefitted thereby, and the men running the ships will of course make a reasonable profit.... Unless we have a merchant marine, our navy if called upon for offensive or defensive work is going to be most defective.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

The adjustment of qualities is so perfect between men and women, and each is so necessary to the other, that the idea of inferiority is absurd.
“Jennie June” Croly 1829–1901, U.S. founder of the woman’s club movement, journalist, author, editor. Demorest’s Illustrated Monthly and Mirror of Fashions, p. 204 (August 1866)
