Management of HIV/AIDS - Adverse Effects

Adverse Effects

There are several concerns about antiretroviral regimens:

  • intolerance: The drugs can have serious side-effects, particularly in advanced disease.
  • resistance: If patients miss doses, drug resistance can develop,
  • cost: Providing anti-retroviral treatment is costly and resource-intensive, and the majority of the world's infected individuals cannot access treatment services.
  • public health: Individuals who fail to use antiretrovirals properly can develop multi-drug resistant strains which can be passed onto others.

Famous quotes containing the words adverse and/or effects:

The duty of the State toward the citizen is the duty of the servant to its master.... One of the duties of the State is that of caring for those of its citizens who find themselves the victims of such adverse circumstances as makes them unable to obtain even the necessities for mere existence without the aid of others.... To these unfortunate citizens aid must be extended by government—not as a matter of charity but as a matter of social duty.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

The machines that are first invented to perform any particular movement are always the most complex, and succeeding artists generally discover that, with fewer wheels, with fewer principles of motion, than had originally been employed, the same effects may be more easily produced. The first systems, in the same manner, are always the most complex.
    Adam Smith (1723–1790)
