A REPORT BY EX-DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF BOMBAY POLICE DR. KAPSE

Any way, as to why the policemen and specially the Mumbai Police has got so much spiritual attachment, (the devotion) to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi? In this respect there are different theories and traditional narrations made by different thoughts of people. But Dr. Kapse has endeavoured to find out the secret of this devotion of Bombay Policemen to Hazrat Makhdum Mahaimi, in the light of historical documents and records. Dr. Kapse, being renowned in the police department as a researcher, has carried out a research on Mumbai City and the history of the Mumbai Police. And Mumbai has, in appreciation to entry into the Maharashtra Police as a sub-inspector of police, Dr. Kapse obtained, during his period of service, degrees of graduation, post graduation and doctorate. It is, really, very laudable. The research in the history of the police has remained his main field in his research activities. Some years back, he was a senior inspector at Mahim Police Station. At present, in the position of Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Kapse has thrown light on the above mentioned subject and has said as follows.

This fact has been established with the means of the archaeology department that the personality of Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi continued to be extraordinary and miraculous. Hazrat Makhdum Baba’s period is considered to be 1335 A.D. to 1360 A.D. and around it. In that time Bombay consisted of seven islands and a few hutments. There was no trace of police department in those days. Bombay was ruled by the King of Gujrat.

Today, the place where the Mahim Police Station is situated, there was the residential house of Makhdum Shah Mahaimi

Through the records of the Archaeology Department, the fact is quite clear that Hazrat Makhdum Shah used to go to Makkah and Madina, during the night time to fetch water for his mother and he used to return in the morning, whereas in those days a journey to Makkah and Madina would take months together.

Deputy commissioner, Dr. Kapse added that Mahim is situated at the sea-shore but there is a well near the shrine of which the water is sweet and worth drinking. This fact is not less than a miracle being a well of drinking water near the sea of salt water. The regular administration of the police department in Bombay came to be established in the year 1660 A.D. Whereas, the devotion of the Bombay police is a thing to be considered, there is a historical record, in this concern, of the British Period. There is given an event that throws light over this attachment of the Bombay Police to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi. The details of it are as under.

In the very period of The Britishers, the smuggling started in Bombay City. There was no trace of smuggling as such in the world of crimes. No one knew what the smuggling is in those days. When the smuggling started in the city, the Britishers set up posts (chowkies) to prevent it and to watch the ports and the coast areas. And such a post ‘came into being in Mahim’s sea-side area.

Relating this event, Dr. Kapse said that, for the watch, the police men, too, were appointed. One night, there was a single policeman on his duty in his turn, he observed one ship anchoring at the sea-side in the middle of the night. It was a ship of the smugglers and they were readying themseves to get the smuggling goods emptied there.

The police constable challenged the smugglers and in turn they started pelting stones at him. in the meantime, the police constable saw on that sea-shore a bearded elderly man dressed in white clothes. The elderly man called out to the police constable and said, “Come on, come to me”. To save himself from that pelting of stones, the police constable reached the elderly man.

The smugglers continued their stone-pelting act but It was only from the distance of fifteen feet that the stones began to return and in spite of the stone going towards the constable, they started going back to the smugglers themselves. In this way, it is said that by arriving there in time, Hazrat Makhdum Baba saved the life of the police constable.

Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Kapse said that this event of the time of the British Rule in India, is still in record, even today, of the Archaeology Department. Any way, why and what for Dr. Kapse had the idea of carrying research on Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi and that too, by the means of the government records? Dr. Kapse explained it that it was the Police Commissioner, S. Rama Murthi who ordered him to file a report in the light of the Government records on Hazrat Mukhdum Shah Mahaimi and he, himself was the Senior Inspector of the Mahaim Police Station.

Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Kapse describing the devotion of the police toMakhdum Shah Mahaimi, in the light of the government records, said that there are so many incidents of revelations and miracles per taining to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi in the government records of the Archaeology Department but there are so many other events related to the private and personal life of the so many officers and constables attached to the Mumbai Police, concerning Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi and that is why the Mumbai Police honours and glorifies Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi and express their devotion to him. The policemen, very often, when they are in family troubles or in their occupational hazards, they go to the shrine of Baba Makhdum and make an ardent appeal to him to solve their difficulties and relieve them from the tension and to their surprise their appeals are answered positively and favourably, it is but a part of everybody’s personal belief and faith.
