The market's mxture of shops and restaurants (kosher and non-kosher) attract residents and tourists, Israelis from Jerusalem and other parts of the country, rich and poor, young and old, religious and secular, Jews and non-Jews, including members of the Arab community. With the tensions that are often pronounced among different ethnic, religious, and social groups, the shuk has been called "a national treasure" – and "one of the few places of sanity in the whole city."
