Later Life
In the early years of the 21st century, Magnusson also wrote for the New Statesman.
On 12 October 2006, his 77th birthday, Magnusson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Magnusson mordantly noted that "this has to be one of my worst birthdays ever". His condition forced him to cancel a string of public appearances. He died on 7 January 2007.

Famous quotes containing the word life:
“When man has neither the strength to subdue his underworld powerswhich are really the ancient powers of his old, superseded self; nor the wit to placate them with sacrifice and the burnt holocaust; then they come back at him, and destroy him again. Hence every new conquest of life means a harrowing of Hell.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
“Anyone who attempts to relate his life loses himself in the immediate. One can only speak of another.”
—Augusto Roa Bastos (b. 1917)
