Route
Travelling east to west, after leaving the M4 near Olveston in England, the M48 heads north-west towards Junction 1 near Aust. It then passes through a toll booth westbound only and crosses the Severn Bridge. On the Wye Bridge it crosses into Wales immediately to the south of Chepstow. It then heads south-west after Junction 2 past Crick and to the north of Caldicot. The motorway merges into the M4 near Magor. Junction 2 for Chepstow can be reached via the A466, which leads to the A48. Junction 2 gives access to the Wye Valley.
For Chepstow – travelling both east and west on the M4 – the M48 is the most direct route.

Famous quotes containing the word route:
“A route differs from a road not only because it is solely intended for vehicles, but also because it is merely a line that connects one point with another. A route has no meaning in itself; its meaning derives entirely from the two points that it connects. A road is a tribute to space. Every stretch of road has meaning in itself and invites us to stop. A route is the triumphant devaluation of space, which thanks to it has been reduced to a mere obstacle to human movement and a waste of time.”
—Milan Kundera (b. 1929)
“A Route of Evanescence
With a revolving Wheel”
—Emily Dickinson (18301886)
“no arranged terror: no forcing of image, plan,
or thought:
no propaganda, no humbling of reality to precept:
terror pervades but is not arranged, all possibilities
of escape open: no route shut,”
—Archie Randolph Ammons (b. 1926)
