End of Mission and Results

Controllers finished the last communications session with Lunokhod 1 at 13:05 UT on September 14, 1971. Attempts to re-establish contact were finally discontinued and the operations of Lunokhod 1 officially ceased on October 4, 1971, the anniversary of Sputnik 1. During its 322 Earth days of operations, Lunokhod travelled 10,540 metres (6.55 miles) and returned more than 20,000 TV images and 206 high-resolution panoramas. Famous quotes containing the words mission and/or results:

We never can tell how our lives may work to the account of the general good, and we are not wise enough to know if we have fulfilled our mission or not.
    Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (1842–1911)

I have no doubt that it was a principle they fought for, as much as our ancestors, and not to avoid a three-penny tax on their tea; and the results of this battle will be as important and memorable to those whom it concerns as those of the battle of Bunker Hill, at least.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
