Lugosi V. Universal Pictures

In Lugosi v. Universal Pictures, 603 P.2d 425 (Cal. 1979), the heirs of Béla Lugosi sued Universal Studios in 1966 for using his personality rights without the heirs' permission. The court ruled in favor of the Lugosi heirs, but Universal Studios won the case in an appeal to the California Supreme Court, where it was determined that a dead person had no right to his likeness, and any rights that existed did not pass to his heirs.

Famous quotes containing the words universal and/or pictures:

    So having said, a while he stood, expecting
    Their universal shout and high applause
    To fill his ear; when contrary, he hears,
    On all sides, from innumerable tongues
    A dismal universal hiss, the sound
    Of public scorn.
    John Milton (1608–1674)

    Then my verse I dishonour, my pictures despise,
    My person degrade & my temper chastise;
    And the pen is my terror, the pencil my shame;
    And my talents I bury, and dead is my fame.
    William Blake (1757–1827)
