Lower Fort Garry - Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site

Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site

The HBC owned the fort until 1951, when it was given to the federal government. The site was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1958. The fort was named one of the top 10 National Historic Sites in the country by Canada's History magazine. Between May and September, costumed interpreters recreate life at Lower Fort Garry in the early 1850s when Eden Colvile was inland governor of the HBC and in residence at the fort. Original buildings and walls, hands on activities, as well as original-to-era furnishings enhance the visitor experience. The site also offers ghosts tours in October, and a Christmas program in December.

Famous quotes containing the words fort, national, historic and/or site:

Why, even when I was innocent her hatred of me hurt a good deal. Now that I’m guilty, her belief in me would hurt even more.
    —Garrett Fort (1900–1945)

There is no calamity which a great nation can invite which equals that which follows a supine submission to wrong and injustice and the consequent loss of national self-respect and honor, beneath which are shielded and defended a people’s safety and greatness.
    Grover Cleveland (1837–1908)

It is, all in all, a historic error to believe that the master makes the school; the students make it!
    Robert Musil (1880–1942)

That is a pathetic inquiry among travelers and geographers after the site of ancient Troy. It is not near where they think it is. When a thing is decayed and gone, how indistinct must be the place it occupied!
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
