Massignon studied extensively different personalities of Islam, such as al-Hallaj, Salman Pak who can both be seen as a link between Islam and Christianity, as well as Muhammad's daughter, Fatimah.

His introduction to Sufism was based on his discovery that its technical lexicon was firmly rooted in the Qur'an.

Famous quotes containing the words scholarly and/or work:

... ideals, standards, aspirations,—those are chameleon words, and take color from their speakers,—often false tints. A scholarly man of my acquaintance once told me that he traveled a thousand miles into the desert to get away from the word uplift, and it was the first word he heard after he reached his destination.
    Carolyn Wells (1862–1942)

I do not want to be covetous, but I think I speak the minds of many a wife and mother when I say I would willingly work as hard as possible all day and all night, if I might be sure of a small profit, but have worked hard for twenty-five years and have never known what it was to receive a financial compensation and to have what was really my own.
Emma Watrous, U.S. inventor. As quoted in Feminine Ingenuity, ch. 8, by Anne L. MacDonald (1992)
