Los Horcones - An Experimental Community

An Experimental Community

Los Horcones can also be regarded as an "experimental community". When the members of Los Horcones encounter problems they design and conduct experiments to test possible solutions to their problems. Depending on the result of an experiment, they may collectively resolve to make an experimental behavior into a community-approved component of their behavioral culture. In this way, the Los Horconans exercise control over the evolution of their culture.

An experimental community does not claim to be perfect and it is a misnomer to describe a Walden Two community as a utopia (a perfect society). An experimental community thrives on its problems because its problems are seen as opportunities for experimentation. An experimental community can be thought of as a eutopia (a good place) in which there is always room for experimentation and improvement.

Famous quotes containing the words experimental and/or community:

If we take in our hand any volume; of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance; let us ask, Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number? No. Does it contain any experimental reasoning, concerning matter of fact and existence? No. Commit it then to flames: for it can contain nothing but sophistry and illusion.
    David Hume (1711–1776)

Every community is an association of some kind and every community is established with a view to some good; for everyone always acts in order to obtain that which they think good. But, if all communities aim at some good, the state or political community, which is the highest of all, and which embraces all the rest, aims at good in a greater degree than any other, and at the highest good.
    Aristotle (384–323 B.C.)
