World War II

When the United States entered World War II, Homar joined the Army. He saw action in the Philippines where he was wounded and for which he received the Purple Heart. Homar continued to broaden his skills during the War, in which he served in an Army Intelligence Unit. He developed a talent for cartography working for the Second Amphibious Combat Engineers Brigade, and published military sketches in numerous American journals. When he returned from the war, he enrolled in the School of the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 1946. While there, he was able to meet and learn from such artists as Ben Shahn, Rufino Tamayo and Gabor Peterdi.

Famous quotes containing the words world war, world and/or war:

If the Third World War is fought with nuclear weapons, the fourth will be fought with bows and arrows.
Louis, 1st Earl Mountbatten Of Burma Mountbatten (1900–1979)

While the focus in the landscape of Old World cities was commonly government structures, churches, or the residences of rulers, the landscape and the skyline of American cities have boasted their hotels, department stores, office buildings, apartments, and skyscrapers. In this grandeur, Americans have expressed their Booster Pride, their hopes for visitors and new settlers, and customers, for thriving commerce and industry.
    Daniel J. Boorstin (b. 1914)

I have agreed to go into the service for the war ... [feeling] that this was a just and necessary war and that it demanded the whole power of the country; that I would prefer to go into it if I knew I was to die or be killed in the course of it, than to live through and after it without taking any part in it.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
