Famous quotes containing the words long, boat and/or rescue:

The statements of science are hearsay, reports from a world outside the world we know. What the poet tells us has long been known to us all, and forgotten. His knowledge is of our world, the world we are both doomed and privileged to live in, and it is a knowledge of ourselves, of the human condition, the human predicament.
    John Hall Wheelock (1886–1978)

When the boat comes to the bridge, it will go through; when the cart gets to the mountains, there will be a way to get over them.
    Chinese proverb.

In the event of an oxygen shortage on airplanes, mothers of young children are always reminded to put on their own oxygen mask first, to better assist the children with theirs. The same tactic is necessary on terra firma. There’s no way of sustaining our children if we don’t first rescue ourselves. I don’t call that selfish behavior. I call it love.
    Joyce Maynard (20th century)
