Unit Formation and Operation
The peak Piccadilly line service requires 76 trains in operation. Each train is made up of two units of three cars. Some units are also formed without a middle cab and are referred to as being "double ended".
All trains in passenger service operate as two units, trains are only permitted to move as a single unit in depots. However one single double ended unit was used to operate the peak-hour Aldwych branch shuttle service until the branch closed in 1994.
The trains are maintained in Cockfosters and Northfields depots.
Like all London Underground trains, the stock operate on a four-rail 630V DC power system.

Famous quotes containing the words unit, formation and/or operation:
“During the Suffragette revolt of 1913 I ... [urged] that what was needed was not the vote, but a constitutional amendment enacting that all representative bodies shall consist of women and men in equal numbers, whether elected or nominated or coopted or registered or picked up in the street like a coroners jury. In the case of elected bodies the only way of effecting this is by the Coupled Vote. The representative unit must not be a man or a woman but a man and a woman.”
—George Bernard Shaw (18561950)
“Out of my discomforts, which were small enough, grew one thing for which I have all my life been gratefulthe formation of fixed habits of work.”
—Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (18441911)
“It is critical vision alone which can mitigate the unimpeded operation of the automatic.”
—Marshall McLuhan (19111980)
