In his review for AllMusic, William Ruhlmann gave the album four and a half out of five stars, noting that Knopfler's "intricate, introspective finger-picked guitar stylings make a perfect musical complement to the wistful tone of Bill Forsyth's comedy film, Local Hero." Ruhlmann continued, "The low-key music picks up traces of Scottish music, but most of it just sounds like Dire Straits doing instrumentals, especially the recurring theme, one of Knopfler's more memorable melodies."

Rolling Stone magazine called Knopfler's film music début "an insinuating LP of charming, cosmopolitan soundtrack music—a record that can make movies in your mind."

For his Local Hero soundtrack, Knopfler received a BAFTA award nomination for Best Score for a Film.

As of 2012, the song "Going Home (Theme of the Local Hero)" is played at Newcastle United F.C. and Aberdeen F.C. home games as the football players run out onto the pitch.

Famous quotes containing the words critical and/or reception:

Most critical writing is drivel and half of it is dishonest.... It is a short cut to oblivion, anyway. Thinking in terms of ideas destroys the power to think in terms of emotions and sensations.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

To the United States the Third World often takes the form of a black woman who has been made pregnant in a moment of passion and who shows up one day in the reception room on the forty-ninth floor threatening to make a scene. The lawyers pay the woman off; sometimes uniformed guards accompany her to the elevators.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)
