Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic described the album as "one of the best double live LPs of the 70s", and "a true live classic", containing more energy and power than the original albums. He also praised the "expert song selection".

Kerrang! magazine listed the album at No. 50 among the "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time".

In 2011, the British music magazine NME ranked Live and Dangerous at No. 1 in its 50 Greatest Live Albums of All Time
