Since its establishment in 1940, it has staged over 200 performances. The theatre's current repertoire mixes classical and modern theatre (Sophocles, William Shakespeare, Federico García Lorca, Bernard-Marie Koltès, Samuel Beckett, Ronald Harwood, B. Strauss, Fyodor Dostoyevsky) with material by contemporary Lithuanian playwrights (Sigitas Parulskis, Herkus Kunčius and others).

The theatre was granted the right its current name in 1998, having previously been known as the "Academical" theatre. In 2001 the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre became a member of the European Theatre Convention.

Famous quotes containing the words national, drama and/or theatre:

Humanism, it seems, is almost impossible in America where material progress is part of the national romance whereas in Europe such progress is relished because it feels nice.
    Paul West (b. 1930)

Life’s so ordinary that literature has to deal with the exceptional. Exceptional talent, power, social position, wealth.... Drama begins where there’s freedom of choice. And freedom of choice begins when social or psychological conditions are exceptional. That’s why the inhabitants of imaginative literature have always been recruited from the pages of Who’s Who.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)

The theatre is the involuntary reflex of the ideas of the crowd.
    Sarah Bernhardt (1845–1923)
