  • May 2 – During a VFL match between Fitzroy and South Melbourne at the Brunswick Street Oval, the field umpire was hit by a stone thrown by a Fitzroy fan.
  • June 6 – At the end of a fiery VFL match between Fitzroy and Essendon at the Brunswick Street Oval, a group of Fitzroy fans invaded the ground and assaulted Essendon players as they tried to leave the field, forcing Essendon fans to jump the fence in order to protect their players; a wild all-in brawl between players, rival fans and team officials ensued. Three players were suspended for four matches each by the VFL.
