This situation has led some to propose that northern split into the separate state of Northern Virginia. During the 2008 Presidential Election, John McCain adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer created a minor controversy making a distinction between northern Virginia and “real Virginia,” which she said is the “part of the state that is more Southern in nature...”
