  • Although there have been no serious attempts at secession of the Idaho Panhandle from within Idaho, movements in neighboring Eastern Washington and Western Montana have invited all or part of the Panhandle region to join them (see below). This section of the state has close ties to Spokane, Washington, and the Inland Northwest, while Boise and Southern Idaho are more distant.
  • In 1863, Lewiston, Idaho, in the southern Panhandle region, became the capital of the newly created Idaho Territory. However, its stint as seat of government was quite short lived. Just one year later, a resolution was passed by the territorial legislature to move the capital to Boise, where it remains today. This deeply displeased Panhandle residents.
