Duncannon Fort The Duncannon star-shaped fort was built in Waterford Harbor in 1588 in expectation of an attack from the Spanish Aramada. Ticrohan—A recently discovered example of a starfort was Ticrohan Castle and its associated starfort, located to the south west of Clonard in County Meath. The fort was garrisoned by forces loyal to Owen Roe O'Neill during the 1640s.
Charles Fort (Ireland) Located in Kinsale, County Cork—Built in 1680 during the reign of King Charles II, this fort remained a British army base until Irish Independence in 1921. A huge fort, with walls up to 6m thick and five defensive bastions around its perimeter, it was built in a star shape, a configuration that provided better defence against cannon fire than the older circular forts. This style of fort was common throughout Europe at that time and Charles Fort is one of the best remaining examples of a star-shaped fort in Europe.
James' Fort: Kinsale, Ireland
There is a fully preserved star fort dating from 1841 encircling the parade ground in Ebrington in Derry. It is situated on the opposite bank of the river Foyle from the more famous 17th century city walls. Derry therefore has two sets of fortified walls both of which are fully intact.

Famous quotes containing the word ireland:
“Come, fix upon me that accusing eye.
I thirst for accusation. All that was sung.
All that was said in Ireland is a lie
Breed out of the contagion of the throng,
Saving the rhyme rats hear before they die.”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
“They call them the haunted shores, these stretches of Devonshire and Cornwall and Ireland which rear up against the westward ocean. Mists gather here, and sea fog, and eerie stories. Thats not because there are more ghosts here than in other places, mind you. Its just that people who live hereabouts are strangely aware of them.”
—Dodie Smith, and Lewis Allen. Roderick Fitzgerald (Ray Milland)
“It is often said that in Ireland there is an excess of genius unsustained by talent; but there is talent in the tongues.”
—V.S. (Victor Sawdon)
