List of Rump States - Since World War II

Since World War II

  • The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia after the independence of Slovenia and Croatia in 1991 and then Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Macedonia in 1992. Restructured in 1992 as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, consisting of Serbia and Montenegro only, then as the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro from 2003 until its final dissolution in 2006.
  • The Islamic State of Afghanistan, reduced to the northern parts of Afghanistan (under the aegis of the Northern Alliance) after the Taliban established power in most of the country and established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. The Northern Alliance subsequently retook the rest of the country and overthrew the Taliban in 2001, following a heavy aerial bombing campaign by the United States, and the United Kingdom following the September 11th attacks.

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or war:

But the highest minds of the world have never ceased to explore the double meaning, or, shall I say, the quadruple, or the centuple, or much more manifold meaning, of every sensuous fact.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Come Vitus, are we men, or are we children? Of what use are all these melodramatic gestures? You say your soul was killed, and that you have been dead all these years. And what of me? Did we not both die here in Marmaros fifteen years ago? Are we any the less victims of the war than those whose bodies were torn asunder? Are we not both the living dead?
Peter Ruric, and Edgar G. Ulmer. Hjalmar Poelzig (Boris Karloff)
