Since World War II

  • The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia after the independence of Slovenia and Croatia in 1991 and then Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Macedonia in 1992. Restructured in 1992 as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, consisting of Serbia and Montenegro only, then as the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro from 2003 until its final dissolution in 2006.
  • The Islamic State of Afghanistan, reduced to the northern parts of Afghanistan (under the aegis of the Northern Alliance) after the Taliban established power in most of the country and established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Famous quotes containing the words world and/or war:

While the focus in the landscape of Old World cities was commonly government structures, churches, or the residences of rulers, the landscape and the skyline of American cities have boasted their hotels, department stores, office buildings, apartments, and skyscrapers. In this grandeur, Americans have expressed their Booster Pride, their hopes for visitors and new settlers, and customers, for thriving commerce and industry.
    Daniel J. Boorstin (b. 1914)

Catholics are necessarily at war with this age. That we are not more conscious of the fact, that we so often endeavour to make an impossible peace with it—that is the tragedy. You cannot serve God and Mammon.
    Eric Gill (1882–1940)
