Ignored Sequels in Various Media
- The film Superman Returns loosely continues the storylines of Superman and Superman II, and disregards the events of Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest For Peace.
- The film Halloween H20: 20 Years Later is a direct sequel to Halloween and Halloween II, dismissing the events that take place in the sequels Halloween 4, Halloween 5, and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (Halloween III was an unrelated story unaffected by the retcon; it was a movie within a movie). The subsequent film Halloween: Resurrection follows the new continuity of Halloween H20, however, it retcons that film's ending in order to do so.
- The film The Exorcist III is a sequel to The Exorcist, and ignores the events of Exorcist II: The Heretic.
- Highlander II: The Quickening is a sequel to the first film, but is willfully ignored by the later films in the series. Similarly, Highlander: Endgame ignores both Highlander II and Highlander: The Final Dimension, and only follows the TV Series and the first film (albeit retconned to fit the Series' storyline).
- The films Predators and Prometheus both ignore the events of Alien vs. Predator and Alien vs Predator: Requiem.
- American Reunion ignores the events of the direct-to-DVD spinoffs.
- X-Men: First Class ignores the events of X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
- The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was released in 1974 with two sequels, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. The fourth film Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation retconned the sequels and was a direct sequel to the original. In 2003, a remake of the original was created entitled The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a following prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. The newest seventh film Texas Chainsaw 3D retcons everything after the original and again, is its direct sequel.
- In 1988, Child's Play was released with two following sequels Child's Play 2 and Child's Play 3, the latter being set years later than the former although released a year apart. A decade after the original release, another sequel Bride of Chucky was released changing the focus of the franchise. The fifth film Seed of Chucky also followed this trend; however the newest sixth film Curse of Chucky will retcon the previous two films and change its focus back to the original, being a direct sequel to Child's Play 3.

Famous quotes containing the word media:
“One can describe a landscape in many different words and sentences, but one would not normally cut up a picture of a landscape and rearrange it in different patterns in order to describe it in different ways. Because a photograph is not composed of discrete units strung out in a linear row of meaningful pieces, we do not understand it by looking at one element after another in a set sequence. The photograph is understood in one act of seeing; it is perceived in a gestalt.”
