List of Quebec Senators - Members By Senate Division

Members By Senate Division

The boundaries for all Quebec districts are mandated in the Constitution Act 1867 and cannot change without a constitutional amendment. The boundaries are described in the 1859 Consolidated Statutes of Canada.

Self designated Senate division can be used by senators who were appointed under the Regional Expansion Clause Section 26 of the British North American Act. This clause can be used to increase the Senate seats by 1 or 2 senators for each region (Ontario Quebec the Maritimes and the Western Provinces). Prime Minister Brian Mulroney is to date the only one to successfully use this clause on September 27, 1990.

Famous quotes containing the words members, senate and/or division:

What’s the greatest enemy of Christianity to-day? Frozen meat. In the past only members of the upper classes were thoroughly sceptical, despairing, negative. Why? Among other reasons, because they were the only people who could afford to eat too much meat. Now there’s cheap Canterbury lamb and Argentine chilled beef. Even the poor can afford to poison themselves into complete scepticism and despair.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)

As the House is designed to provide a reflection of the mood of the moment, the Senate is meant to reflect the continuity of the past—to preserve the delicate balance of justice between the majority’s whims and the minority’s rights.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973)

For in the division of the nations of the whole earth he set a ruler over every people; but Israel is the Lord’s portion: whom, being his firstborn, he nourisheth with discipline, and giving him the light of his love doth not forsake him. Therefore all their works are as the sun before him, and his eyes are continually upon their ways.
    Apocrypha. Ecclesiasticus 17:17-9.
