On May 11, 2011, Arthur Hitchcock of Long Beach, CA, began his walk across the United States. He walked to raise awareness/money for Breast Cancer Research and to create a photo documentary of his journey. Carrying about 40-45 lbs of gear (including camera equipment), Arthur averaged 33–35 miles a day. His best friend Anthony Felix was his "Support Vehicle" driver, meeting Arthur at the end of each day. They both frequently camped in the back of a 2004 Ford Ranger (Nicknamed "Shell City") or would rely on the compassion of strangers. Arthur and Anthony also frequently used Couchsurfing.org to help find places to stay across the US. He completed his walk at the state capitol building in Augusta, ME after 5 months 22 days. The walk was in memory of his mother and father. Janet M. Hitchcock passed away October 6, 2010 of Breast Cancer. His father, Mike Hitchcock, in 1994 of heart complications.
