  • Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander: First African-American woman to receive a Ph.D. in the United States; first African-American woman to graduate from Penn Law; first black woman to be admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar; Civil Rights activist, appointed to the Civil Rights Commission by President Harry S. Truman.
  • Carrie Burnham Kilgore: First woman to graduate from Penn with a law degree (LL.B.) and the first woman to practice law in Pennsylvania; she argued for a woman’s right to vote before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. She was also the first woman in New York to earn a medical degree.
  • Stuart F. Feldman (1937–2010), co-founder of Vietnam Veterans of America.
