This article lists the Metropolitan areas in India, by population according to the 2011 provisional population results. In India, a Metropolitan area is an extended urban agglomeration, which has a population of ten lakhs or more, comprised in one or more districts and consisting of two or more Municipalities or Panchayats or other contiguous area, specified by the Governor by public notification to be a Metropolitan area.
