List Of Million-selling Singles In The United Kingdom

A million-selling single is regarded as one that has sold over one million copies. In the United Kingdom, singles that sold this quantity were formerly classified as a "platinum record", although the platinum sales threshold was reduced in 1989 due to declining sales. Despite this, the seven-figure mark has retained its importance and the Official Charts Company (OCC) and Music Week regularly announce when a record reaches this threshold. The OCC classify records as million-sellers using sales data from November 1952 onwards and, for the 2010 summer bank holiday, the BBC commissioned them to compile a chart of records that had passed this mark.

As of June 2013, 136 singles have achieved this feat. At the start of the century, 70 records had sold one million copies. Since the introduction of music downloads in 2004, nineteen singles released in the prior century have passed the one million sales, and a total of twenty-one records released this century have become million-sellers. The most recently released and classified is "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams. The best-selling record is Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997".

The following list is restricted to sales data since the inception of a UK chart in 1952.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, united and/or kingdom:

Do your children view themselves as successes or failures? Are they being encouraged to be inquisitive or passive? Are they afraid to challenge authority and to question assumptions? Do they feel comfortable adapting to change? Are they easily discouraged if they cannot arrive at a solution to a problem? The answers to those questions will give you a better appraisal of their education than any list of courses, grades, or test scores.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)

Modern tourist guides have helped raised tourist expectations. And they have provided the natives—from Kaiser Wilhelm down to the villagers of Chichacestenango—with a detailed and itemized list of what is expected of them and when. These are the up-to- date scripts for actors on the tourists’ stage.
    Daniel J. Boorstin (b. 1914)

The veto is a President’s Constitutional right, given to him by the drafters of the Constitution because they wanted it as a check against irresponsible Congressional action. The veto forces Congress to take another look at legislation that has been passed. I think this is a responsible tool for a president of the United States, and I have sought to use it responsibly.
    Gerald R. Ford (b. 1913)

Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace. Money will come if we seek first the Kingdom of God—the rest will be given.
