Non-members
As of July 2011, there are currently 193 members of the United Nations and only five permanent members of the Security Council. This means that the other ten seats are assigned amongst the remaining 188 members. As a result, many members have never been on the Security Council. The following list is a summary of all such countries, currently containing 72 modern nations and three historical ones. The three historical UN members listed are Tanganyika, Zanzibar, and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form Tanzania in 1964, while the FR Yugoslavia eventually dissolved into Montenegro and Serbia in 2006. All the other historical members were, at one time or another, represented in the UNSC.
