List of mayors of Jerusalem in chronological order.
The Jerusalem City Council was established in 1863 during the rule of the Ottoman Empire. From 1948 to 1967 two municipalities operated in the city: the Israeli municipality of Jerusalem provided services to the western neighborhoods of the city and the Jordanian municipality of Al-Quds to its eastern parts.
By 1840, the Jewish community constituted the largest single religious group in the city. From the 1880s onward, the Jews constituted the majority within the city. However, it was only in 1937, under the British Mandate, that the first Jewish mayor was appointed.

Famous quotes containing the words list and/or jerusalem:
“We saw the machinery where murderers are now executed. Seven have been executed. The plan is better than the old one. It is quietly done. Only a few, at the most about thirty or forty, can witness [an execution]. It excites nobody outside of the list permitted to attend. I think the time for capital punishment has passed. I would abolish it. But while it lasts this is the best mode.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
“And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?”
—William Blake (1757–1827)
