List of Master's Degrees in North America - Jurisprudence

Jurisprudence

A Master's of Jurisprudence degree M.J. or M.Jur) is sometimes used as an alternative name for both Master of Laws and Master of Studies in Law. It also refers to masters-level courses concentrating on legal theory, in particular the philosophy of law and the sociological theory of law. In the United States, students of an M.J. curriculum are non-lawyers, often business professionals, who wish to gain some understanding of various aspects of law.

It is important to distinguish that individuals with an M.J. degree in the United States are not eligible to sit for the bar exams of most jurisdictions and are not eligible to practice law. Consequently, such individuals are not considered and may not refer to themselves as a lawyer or attorney-at-law.
