List of Historians

This is a list of historians.

The names are grouped by order of the historical period in which they were writing, which is not necessarily the same as the period in which they specialize

Chroniclers and annalists, though they are not historians in the true sense, are also listed here for convenience.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list and/or historians:

    Shea—they call him Scholar Jack—
Went down the list of the dead.
    Officers, seamen, gunners, marines,
The crews of the gig and yawl,
The bearded man and the lad in his teens,
    Carpenters, coal-passers—all.
    Joseph I. C. Clarke (1846–1925)

Love’s boat has been shattered against the life of everyday. You and I are quits, and it’s useless to draw up a list of mutual hurts, sorrows, and pains.
    Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893–1930)

As all historians know, the past is a great darkness, and filled with echoes. Voices may reach us from it; but what they say to us is imbued with the obscurity of the matrix out of which they come; and try as we may, we cannot always decipher them precisely in the clearer light of our day.
    Margaret Atwood (b. 1939)
