Tom Hayes was the brother of Esther Hayes who came to live on the Street after being released from prison. He had several crazy money-making ideas, all of them needing some sort of investment, usually from Esther which she flatly refused. After sponging off his sister for too long, a friend of Esther's pointed out to him that he wasn't welcome anymore and he subsequently left.

Famous quotes containing the words tom and/or hayes:
“New York state sentence for a Peeping Tom is six months in the workhouse. And they got no windows in the workhouse. You know, in the old days they used to put your eyes out with a red-hot poker.”
—John Michael Hayes (b. 1919)
“I leave the governors office next week, and with it public life ... [which] has been on the whole a pleasant one. But for ten years and over my salaries have not equalled my expenses, and there has been a feeling of responsibility, a lack of independence, and a necessary neglect of my family and personal interests and comfort, which make the prospect of a change comfortable to think of.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
