The totalitarian Communist Khmer Rouge régime established concentration camps. Various studies have estimated the death toll most commonly between 1.4 million and 2.2 million, with perhaps half of those deaths being due to executions and the rest as a result of starvation and disease. This is a massive proportion of the Cambodian population, which was only 6-8 million.

Among the best-documented concentration camps were The Killing Fields and the torture camp Security Prison 21.
