1980s

1980

  • April 6, A minor tornado touches down near Altona, Manitoba.

1982

  • June 30, A violent tornado tore through a farm area 15 km southeast of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. The tornado left a kilometer-wide path which damaged a house, destroyed mobile homes and leveled a log cabin. Two people were injured.

1983

  • Reeces Corners Tornado, Reece's Corners, Ontario (around 20 km east of Sarnia, Ontario). Millions of dollars in damage.
  • June 24, A massive super-cell thunderstorm with hail, high winds, and nearly 100 mm of rain in 45 minutes caused massive flooding in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and wind damage was reported from a plow wind or a possible tornado on the north end of the city. One death was reported with this storm when a stalled vehicle was caught in a flooded underpass on the north end of the city.
  • July 8. A large tornado touches down near Blackfoot, Alberta.

1984

  • June 29, A tornado touches down near Athabasca, Alberta, destroying granaries and farm equipment. One person suffered serious injuries.
  • July 15, One person was killed by a tornado near Maniwaki, Quebec
  • September 2, Southwest Ontario Tornado Outbreak of 1984 – 6 confirmed tornadoes touch down all over southwestern Ontario, mostly near and in London injuring 30.

1985

  • May 31, An F4 tornado hits Barrie, Ontario, becoming known as The "Barrie" Tornado Outbreak of 1985. It was part of the bigger 1985 United States – Canadian tornado outbreak. There were 13 confirmed tornado touchdowns in Ontario. 12 people were killed, 8 in Barrie alone, and hundreds injured. The tornado detroyed more than 300 buildings, and damaged another 100, leaving 800 homeless. The cost was estimated at over $100 million. Another four people were killed by a tornado that struck close to Grand Valley, Orangeville and Tottenham. That tornado had a touchdown path length of over 100 km (62 mi).   • July 7 A tornado in the Meadowvale area of Mississauga, Ontario injures 10 and caused $400,000 damage.

1986

  • May 6, Minor tornado touches down near Lampman, Saskatchewan.
  • June 1, Three tornadoes touched down in Saskatoon. Roofs and windows in the area were damaged by high winds and hailstones.
  • June 24, A tornado touched down in Tingwick, Quebec, damaging 12 properties.
  • June 29, One tornado touched down near Stirling, Alberta near Lethbridge, and another tore through Cayley, 60 km south of Calgary. The tornadoes destroyed a storage shed, tossed a van across the yard, and hurled a large horse against a barbed wire fence. No injuries were reported.
  • July 9, 3 tornadoes briefly touched down throughout central Alberta. Two were spotted near Penhold and one reported south of Sylvan Lake.

1987

  • July 6, A thunderstorm caused at least two tornadoes in Winnipeg; strong winds and 40 millimetres of rain in two and a half hours caused flash flooding and resulted in considerable property damage.
  • July 31, A Strong F4 ripped through the eastern part of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and parts of neighbouring Strathcona County, leaving 27 dead, and 253 injured. One of Canada's strongest tornadoes, and the second deadliest tornado (after the 1912 Regina Cyclone). At least four more tornadoes touched down between Millet and Vegreville. See: Edmonton Tornado

1988

  • May 1, Weak tornado grazes eastern Metro Vancouver.
  • Medicine Hat, Alberta Tornado, Medicine Hat, Alberta; tornado caused an estimated $50 million in damage.

1989

  • June 19, Called the Saskatchewan Tornado Outbreak of 1989, eight tornadoes touched down over central Saskatchewan. Winds gusted up to 130 km/h and hail shredded crops at Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan.
  • July 8, An F3 tornado touches down in Peebles, Saskatchewan. The general store and the skating/curling rink were blown into the bush about 3 km from where they had originally stood.
  • July 27, A series of severe thunderstorms spawned a weak tornado in the west end of Edmonton, Alberta. The tornado injured two people, damaged buildings and uprooted trees and powerlines.
  • August 14, Dubbed the New Brunswick Tornado Outbreak, three tornadoes touch down in New Brunswick. One of the tornadoes affects Carlisle where trees are uprooted and a barn is destroyed, but amazingly 22 out of 24 glass storm windows stored inside are left undamaged.
  • November 16, An F2 tornado caused 2 million dollars in damage in the community of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec. This is the latest in the year tornado recorded in the province of Quebec. It also occurred during the same tornado outbreak as the Huntsville, Alabama Tornado.
