Private Life

He married four times:

  • Phyllis Ralph in 1913 and divorced in 1919. In 1941 their son, John Arthur Atwill (born 1914), was killed in action aged 26.
  • American actress Elsie Mackay in 1919. (One source claims he had a son, John, with her.) In 1925 Atwill had detectives raid an apartment on Manhattan's 68th Street, where Mackay was found with actor Max Montesole. A divorce was finally granted in March 1928.

Famous quotes containing the words private life, private and/or life:

As in private life one differentiates between what a man thinks and says of himself and what he really is and does, so in historical struggles one must still more distinguish the language and the imaginary aspirations of parties from their real organism and their real interests, their conception of themselves from their reality.
    Karl Marx (1818–1883)

I believe that what so saddens the reformer is not his sympathy with his fellows in distress, but, though he be the holiest son of God, is his private ail. Let this be righted, let the spring come to him, the morning rise over his couch, and he will forsake his generous companions without apology.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    How are we to write
    The Russian novel in America
As long as life goes so unterribly?
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
