Liona Boyd - Lenin's Piano

Lenin's Piano

During a private WPO tour of the Kremlin in December 1991 Boyd played the first chords of Oh Canada on Lenin's piano.

On New Year's Eve she played Granada by Agustín Lara at a gala. Boyd was the only non-Russian invited by Gavril Popov, the mayor of Moscow, to perform at this event.

Famous quotes containing the words lenin and/or piano:

All our lives we fought against exalting the individual, against the elevation of the single person, and long ago we were over and done with the business of a hero, and here it comes up again: the glorification of one personality. This is not good at all. I am just like everybody else.
    —Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (1870–1924)

It is not always possible to predict the response of a doting Jewish mother. Witness the occasion on which the late piano virtuoso Oscar Levant telephoned his mother with some important news. He had proposed to his beloved and been accepted. Replied Mother Levant: “Good, Oscar, I’m happy to hear it. But did you practice today?”
    Liz Smith (20th century)
