Famous quotes containing the word roots:

The roots of the grass strain,
Tighten, the earth is rigid, waits—he is waiting—

And suddenly, and all at once, the rain!
    Archibald MacLeish (1892–1982)

The cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap
Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge
Through living roots awaken in my head.
But I’ve no spade to follow men like them.
    Seamus Heaney (b. 1939)

What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
    Out of this stony rubbish?
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
