Muscles
- From the medial lip of the linea aspera and its prolongations above and below, the Vastus medialis originates.
- From the lateral lip and its upward prolongation, the Vastus lateralis takes origin.
- The Adductor magnus is inserted into the linea aspera, and to its lateral prolongation above, and its medial prolongation below.
- Between the Vastus lateralis and the Adductor magnus two muscles are attached:
- the Gluteus maximus inserted above,
- and the short head of the Biceps femoris originating below.
- Between the Adductor magnus and the Vastus medialis four muscles are inserted:
- the Iliacus and Pectineus above;
- the Adductor brevis and Adductor longus below.
The linea aspera is perforated a little below its center by the nutrient canal, which is directed obliquely upward.

Famous quotes containing the word muscles:
“What is this beast, she thought,
with muscles on his arms
like a bag of snakes?
What is this moss on his legs?
What prickly plant grows on his cheeks?
What is this voice as deep as a dog?”
—Anne Sexton (19281974)
“The indispensable ingredient of any game worth its salt is that the children themselves play it and, if not its sole authors, share in its creation. Watching TVs ersatz battles is not the same thing at all. Children act out their emotions, they dont talk them out and they dont watch them out. Their imagination and their muscles need each other.”
—Leontine Young (20th century)
“All of this,
and the curious knee-cap,
fitted above the wrought greaves,
and the sharp muscles of your back
which the tunic could not cover.”
—Hilda Doolittle (18861961)
