In October 2011, Lingle said on KSSK radio show that she would run for the open seat vacated by retiring U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI). She won the Republican primary election on August 11, 2012 and was defeated by Democrat Mazie Hirono in the general election on November 6, 2012.
