The Linares International Chess Tournament (Sp.: Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Linares), is an annual chess tournament, usually played around the end of February, which takes its name from the city of Linares in the JaƩn province of Andalusia, Spain, in which it is held. It is sometimes described as the Wimbledon of chess, being one of the strongest annual tournaments held on the de facto chess tour, along with the "Tata Steel" Wijk aan Zee, Tal Memorial and Dortmund events.
The Linares tournament began in 1978 and has been held annually since 1988 (with the exception of 1996). The 2011 and 2012 tournaments were cancelled for economic reasons.

Famous quotes containing the word chess:
“What have we achieved in mowing down mountain ranges, harnessing the energy of mighty rivers, or moving whole populations about like chess pieces, if we ourselves remain the same restless, miserable, frustrated creatures we were before? To call such activity progress is utter delusion. We may succeed in altering the face of the earth until it is unrecognizable even to the Creator, but if we are unaffected wherein lies the meaning?”
—Henry Miller (18911980)
