Casting
Thomas explained that he based Marshall and Lily on himself and his wife Rebecca. Rebecca was a little upset at the prospect at first, but because she is a big fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she agreed if Alyson Hannigan could play her. Hannigan was looking to do more comedy work after having worked on the primary American Pie series and was available for the show.
