Government

At its height, the Liao Dynasty controlled what is now Shanxi, Hebei, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Inner Mongolia provinces in China, as well as portions of the Korean peninsula, and much of the country of Mongolia. The peak population is estimated at 750,000 Khitans and two to three million ethnic Chinese.

Famous quotes containing the word government:

Frankly, I’d like to see the government get out of war altogether and leave the whole field to private industry.
    Joseph Heller (b. 1923)

I heartily accept the motto, “That government is best which governs least”; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe,—”That government is best which governs not at all”; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

America has made no reparation to the Vietnamese, nothing. We are the richest people in the world and they are among the poorest. We savaged them, though they had never hurt us, and we cannot find it in our hearts, our honor, to give them help—because the government of Vietnam is Communist. And perhaps because they won.
    Martha Gellhorn (b. 1908)
