Civil Unions and Same-sex Marriage
The United Mexican States is a federation comprising thirty-one states and a Federal District, the capital city (also known as Mexico City). Although a federal civil code exists, each state has its own (usually the same as the civil code for the Federal District) regulating (among other issues) concubinage and marriage. Same-sex civil unions and same-sex marriages are not recognized at the federal level. However, in recent years some states are considering legislation on such issues.
