Leyland Cypress

The Leyland Cypress, Cupressus x leylandii (syn. × Cupressocyparis leylandii, Callitropsis × leylandii, x Cuprocyparis Leylandii), often referred to as just Leylandii, is a fast-growing coniferous evergreen tree much used in horticulture, primarily for hedges and screens. Even on sites of relatively poor culture, plants have been known to grow to heights of 15 metres (49 ft) in 16 years. Their rapid, thick growth means they are sometimes used to enforce privacy, but such use can result in disputes with neighbours whose own property becomes overshadowed.

Famous quotes containing the word cypress:

    When I am dead, my dearest, Sing no sad songs for me;
    Plant thou no roses at my head, Nor shady cypress tree:
    Be the green grass above me With showers and dewdrops wet;
    And if thou wilt, remember, And if thou wilt, forget.
    Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830–1894)
