Leonor Beleza - AIDS Scandal

AIDS Scandal

In 2001, a Portugal court indicted Beleza propagating a contagious disease during her time in as Health Minister during the 1980s. More than 100 Portuguese haemophiliacs had become infected with the AIDS virus after receiving transfusions of contaminated plasma that had been imported and distributed by the public health service, part of the larger worldwide contaminated haemophilia blood products scandal.

Famous quotes containing the words aids and/or scandal:

Sometimes I have a terrible feeling that I am dying not from the virus, but from being untouchable.
Amanda Heggs, British AIDS sufferer. Quoted in Guardian (London, June 12, 1989)

Certain it is that scandal is good brisk talk, whereas praise of one’s neighbour is by no means lively hearing. An acquaintance grilled, scored, devilled, and served with mustard and cayenne pepper excites the appetite; whereas a slice of cold friend with currant jelly is but a sickly, unrelishing meat.
    William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–1863)
