In January 2005 the population of the Leonese Country was distributed by provinces as follows: Leon, 497,387; Salamanca and Zamora 351,326, 197,237.
It is a sparsely populated and demographically declining, especially in rural areas and even in small traditional towns. The demographic characteristics of the area show an aging population with a low birth rate and a mortality that approaches the national average.
