Awards

Garfield won the Guardian Prize for Devil-in-the-Fog (1966), the 1987 Phoenix Award for Smith (1967), the Carnegie Medal for The God Beneath the Sea (1970), and the Whitbread Award for John Diamond (1980). Three times he was a commended runner up for the Carnegie Medal, recognising the year's best British children's book: for Smith, Black Jack (1968), and Drummer Boy (1970), the latter in competition with his Medal-winning work.
