Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway

The Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway (L&MVLR) was a narrow gauge railway in Staffordshire, Great Britain that operated between 1904 and 1934. When in operation, the line mainly carried milk from dairies in the region, acting as a feeder to the standard gauge system. It also provided passenger services to the small villages and beauty spots along its route. The line was built to a gauge of 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) and to the light rail standards provided by the Light Railways Act 1896 to reduce construction costs.

The route of the line is now a foot- and cycle- path.

    I see before me now a traveling army halting,
    Below a fertile valley spread, with barns and the orchards of summer,

    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

    Not yet the thirtieth year, the thirtieth
    Station where time reverses his light heels
    To run both ways, and makes of forward back;
    Whose long co-ordinates are birth and death....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

    Her personality had an architectonic quality; I think of her when I see some of the great London railway termini, especially St. Pancras, with its soot and turrets, and she overshadowed her own daughters, whom she did not understand—my mother, who liked things to be nice; my dotty aunt. But my mother had not the strength to put even some physical distance between them, let alone keep the old monster at emotional arm’s length.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)
